“Sol Prendido” for Borderland Beat
Juan Gerardo Treviño Chávez, one of the leaders of the Northeast Cartel who headed the criminal cell known as the Tropa del Infierno, with a presence in the states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo León and Coahuila, was captured during a special operation by the Mexican Army.
The capture of the drug trafficker triggered riots, blockades and burning of vehicles in the streets of Nuevo Laredo, as well as attacks on the military.
Treviño Chávez is the nephew of the former head of Los Zetas, Miguel Treviño Morales, the Z40.
Following the captures of Z40 in 2013 and his brother Alejandro, Omar or Z42, in 2015, Los Zetas suffered a fragmentation. Since then, the Northeast Cartel has become their heir apparent, especially in the states of Coahuila and Tamaulipas.
The U.S. consulate in Nuevo Laredo issued an alert announcing that it would reschedule appointments for March 14. Armed men reportedly fired shots at local Mexican Army facilities and at the U.S. consulate offices.
The mayor of Nuevo Laredo, Carmen Lilia Canturosas, urged citizens to “exercise extreme caution” during nighttime tours and so-called hot spots.
